Monroe Named to First Preseason All-Big East Team
Sophomore center Greg Monroe was named to the first-team All-Big East squad on Tuesday.
Monroe joins seniors Deonta Vaughn of Cincinatti, Lazar Hawyard of Marquette, Scottie Reynolds of Villanova, Da’Sean Butler of West Virginia on the team, along with the Big East Preseason POY, Luke Harangody of Notre Dame.
Harangody, who was preseason POY of the Big East last season, is now the second player in Big East history to earn the honor multiple times. The other? Georgetown might be familiar with him… someone named Patrick Ewing? He was named preseason POY three times, the final time being his senior season of 1984-1985 (Georgetown fans still don’t talk about the end of that season).
Despite the Hoyas’ collapse down the stretch last season, the Big East voters have faith in Georgetown growing up this season. The Hoyas were projected to finish fifth in the conference, which would be a huge upgrade from their 13th place finish a season ago.
Monroe joins guards Chris Wright and Austin Freeman in the difficult process of wiping last season from everyone’s mind and bringing Georgetown back to the NCAA tournament.
