In their past two games, the Georgetown Hoyas lost to a team at the top of the Big East and a team near the bottom of the conference standings.
But the 11th-ranked Hoyas righted the ship on Tuesday night and rallied from a six-point halftime deficit, getting 24 of Austin Freeman’s 29 points in the second half to defeat Louisville, 70-60.
After losses to Big East leader Syracuse and struggling Rutgers, the Hoyas were looking squarely at a third-consecutive defeat. But after trailing the entire first half, the Hoyas (19-7, 9-6) held Louisville to just one field goal in a 15-minute span of the second half.
Freeman hit five 3-pointers, all in the second half, to spark the Georgetown surge. Greg Monroe pulled down a team-high 14 rebounds.
The Hoyas move into a tie for fifth place with Louisville in the rugged Big East standings (all four teams ahead of them are ranked, including three of the top seven teams in the nation). Georgetown plays host to Notre Dame Saturday, before finishing the regular season with games Monday at West Virginia and next Saturday vs. Cincinnati.

The No. 7 Georgetown Hoyas were the victim of another upset in a 71-68 loss to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
This isn’t the first time that Georgetown has laid an egg against an inferior Big East opponent this season.
Head coach John Thompson III has to getting very frustrated at his team’s inability to take care of business against lesser opponents.
Center Greg Monroe admitted that the Scarlet Knights came out with a lot more intensity than his team.
Monroe did his part for the Hoyas, scoring 19 points and grabbing eight rebounds in the losing cause.

Coming off the high of handing Villanova its first loss in Big East play on a snowy Saturday in the nation’s capitol, what will we see from the Georgetown Hoyas on Tuesday at Providence?
Will the seventh-ranked team in the nation play as they did in the inspired 103-90 victory over the then-No. 2 ranked Wildcats, or will the Hoyas revert to the sluggish pace witnessed in a 72-64 upset loss at home to South Florida last Wednesday?
At 17-5 on the season and sitting three games out in the Big East, the Hoyas need this win against the Friars, who are in the bottom part of the league standings. With a Sunday road game at Rutgers standing before a rough finish to the regular season (vs. Syracuse, at Louisville, vs. Notre Dame, at West Virginia, vs. Cincinnati), the Hoyas need to find their stride.
The balanced scoring approach has worked well for a Georgetown team averaging 73.9 points per game this season. Austin Freeman scored 25 points in the win over Villanova. Jason Clark added 24 and Greg Monroe scored 19 in the victory.
Providence features an up-tempo offense that averages 82.3 points per contest, but the Friars are struggling of late, having lost three games in a row.

The Georgetown Hoyas nearly knocked off Villanova in Big East play back on Jan. 17, losing by five points on the road.
Saturday, in snowy Washington D.C., there would be no near miss for the Hoyas. Georgetown raced to a 19-point halftime lead and never looked back, handing the No. 2-ranked Wildcats their first Big East loss, 103-90.
With the win at the Verizon Center, No. 8 Georgetown (17-5, 7-4) bounced back from Wednesday’s upset loss to South Florida to pull within 2 ½ games of Syracuse and Villanova in the Big East, ending Villanova’s 11-game winning streak.
The Hoyas enjoyed a huge advantage at the free-throw line and took full advantage of it, converting 39-of-50 at the line. The Wildcats (20-2, 9-1) hit 17-of-23.
Jason Clark hit four 3-pointers in the first half, en route to a 24-point performance and helping the Hoyas build a 50-31 halftime advantage. Austin Freeman led the Hoyas with 25 points.
Georgetown seized control in the first half, forcing 16 turnovers and hitting 56 percent of its shots from the field in the opening 20 minutes. Villanova closed within 10 in the second half but the Hoyas allowed the Wildcats to get no closer.
Georgetown travels to Providence on Tuesday, then plays host to Rutgers next Sunday.

The No. 7 Georgetown Hoyas evidently overlooked the South Florida Bulls in a stunning, 72-64 defeat.
To lose in front of their home fans at the Verizon Center to South Florida just days after dominating Duke was puzzling to say the least.
A lot of pundits thought that Georgetown was a team quickly on the rise and building toward a successful March.
Greg Monroe led the Hoyas with 21 points and eight rebounds, but he had none in the second half.
Austin Freeman added 21 as well for the Hoyas, who said they weren’t overlooking the Bulls.

As of 10:15 p.m. Friday night, the snow still was swirling throughout the Beltway. But Saturday’s big matchup for the Georgetown Hoyas is still scheduled to begin in a little less than 15 hours.
The Hoyas play host to Big East leader Villanova, the second-ranked team in the nation. It’s a huge game for the Hoyas, who are smarting following Wednesday’s 72-64 upset loss to South Florida.
The defeat put Georgetown (16-5, 6-4) 3 ½ games out in the Big East, behind Villanova, Syracuse and West Virginia (the second, fourth and sixth ranked teams in the nation, per the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll). Georgetown can ill afford another loss if it wants to keep its hopes alive of finishing atop the conference.
But getting to the Verizon Center for the noon tipoff in the middle of a blizzard may be easier than walking out of the arena with a win. The Wildcats (20-1, 9-0) have won 11 games in a row and haven’t loss in nearly two months, after falling to Temple on Dec. 13.
Georgetown nearly upended that streak on Jan. 17, though, losing a hard-fought 82-77 decision at Villanova.

On one end was a nationally televised contest against Duke with the President in the house.
On the other end was a showdown with the No. 2-ranked team in the nation, Villanova, which leads the Big East.
In the middle, an upset special, one that was quite upsetting for the Georgetown Hoyas Wednesday night. The Hoyas blew a nine-point halftime lead, losing to unranked South Florida 72-64 at the Verizon Center.
A stunning blow for a team that four days earlier upended No. 9-ranked Duke and which has stood toe-to-toe with the best in the Big East this season, the Hoyas drop to 6-4 in conference play and sit 3 ½ games behind Villanova. Georgetown plays host to the Wildcats Saturday.
Greg Monroe scored 21 points and eight rebounds for the Hoyas, but fouled out with 2:52 left. Austin Freeman scored 21. The Hoyas, who shot 71 percent in beating Duke, were awful from the floor in the second half: 36 percent. Georgetown also was a meager 50 percent from the free-throw line (11-for-22).
